Inside the Frame Podcast Ep. 16: A Journey Through Art and Community on the South Shore with Julia Driscoll

The latest episode of Inside the Frame podcast brings a vibrant and insightful conversation with Julia Driscoll, a South Shore artist and key figure at the North River Arts Society. Hosted by Frame Center, the episode dives deep into Julia’s artistic journey, her dedication to the local art scene, and her passion for fostering a thriving creative community on the South Shore.

Julia’s Artistic and Professional Background

Julia Driscoll grew up in Norwell, MA, and her journey into the arts began with her education at Lesley University College of Art and Design, where she earned a B.F.A. in Design. Her professional path led her through roles as a graphic designer across industries such as advertising and commercial real estate. However, it was her move to community-centered projects like the “Wicked Women Makers Market” in 2019—a local artisan fair she co-founded—that ignited her passion for connecting artists and the community.

In 2020, Julia joined the North River Arts Society as an office administrator, a position that merged her organizational skills with her creative aspirations. Today, she thrives on collaborating with artists and helping the South Shore art scene flourish.

The South Shore Art Scene: Tradition Meets Renewal

Throughout the podcast, Julia reflects on the rich artistic heritage of the South Shore. She speaks to the responsibility of nurturing this legacy while also inviting a new generation of artists to contribute. “It feels like we’ve inherited this rich art culture on the South Shore, and I feel a big responsibility to keep that going and to bring in the next generation of artists,” she shares.

Julia’s work at North River Arts Society exemplifies this mission. Whether coordinating exhibitions, organizing events, or fostering connections between artists and the community, her efforts ensure the region’s art scene remains dynamic and inclusive.

Collaboration and Creativity

Julia’s collaborative spirit extends to her personal and professional projects. Her branding work for SlackTide Coffee, a family-run business, is a testament to her creative versatility. “I had so much fun designing their logo and branding. It was an opportunity to bring my vision to life with complete creative freedom,” she recalls.

In addition to her professional work, Julia is a multidisciplinary artist, dabbling in painting, sewing, and even wood carving. She emphasizes the joy of exploration, noting, “I don’t want to limit my creative side. I want to protect it, let it evolve, and see where it leads.”

Building Bridges Through Art

A significant theme of the episode is the importance of making art accessible. Julia highlights initiatives like the annual student art exhibit at the North River Arts Society, which showcases work from Marshfield High School students. “It’s exciting for them to see their art in a gallery setting, and it inspires them to keep creating,” she says. Her vision includes developing a youth leadership group at North River to give young artists more opportunities to engage with and shape the art community.

Julia also discusses the power of outdoor and public art, expressing a desire for more installations that transform everyday spaces into canvases for creativity. She points to examples like painted electrical boxes in Rockland and outdoor sculptures as inspirations for similar projects on the South Shore.

Upcoming Events and Opportunities

The North River Arts Society has a packed calendar, including the Member Show opening on October 5th, 2024. Julia encourages everyone—whether seasoned artists or art enthusiasts—to visit, participate, and support the arts. “You don’t have to be an artist to get involved,” she stresses. Memberships, donations, and event attendance are all impactful ways to contribute to the art community.

A Shared Mission

Julia’s conversation with the Inside the Frame host underscores a shared mission: raising awareness about the vibrant art scene on the South Shore and ensuring its longevity. Together, they discuss ideas for collaboration among local art organizations and ways to create a unified platform for events, resources, and artist opportunities.
