SUMMARY:Monotype Guild of New England: 40 Years of Unique Prints
DESCRIPTION:Monotype Guild of New England:\n40 Years of Unique Prints\n(40th Anniversary Exhibit\, Sixth National Juried Exhibition)\nThrough August 31\, 2025\nReception: May 11\, 2025\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm\n \n\nFor four decades\, the Monotype Guild of New England has championed the art of the\nmonotype and monoprint\, fostering a vibrant community of printmakers dedicated to the\nexpressive potential of one-of-a-kind prints. MGNE celebrates this milestone with\nMonotype Guild of New England: 40 Years of Unique Prints\, a national juried exhibition\nshowcasing the breadth and innovation of contemporary printmaking. \nFeaturing works from 73 artists across the United States\, this exhibition highlights the\ndynamic and ever-evolving nature of monotype—a process that embraces spontaneity\,\nexperimentation\, and individuality. Unlike traditional printmaking techniques that\nproduce multiples\, monotypes and monoprints yield singular impressions\, making each\nprint a distinctive exploration of form\, texture\, and color. This exhibition exemplifies how\ntraditional printmaking techniques can be reimagined in a contemporary context. \nInternationally acclaimed printmaker\, Karen Kunc’s expertise and artistic vision make\nher uniquely qualified as juror for this exhibition. She selected the prints in the exhibition\nfrom 645 works submitted by 238 artists. Kunc is Cather Professor Emerita of the\nUniversity of Nebraska-Lincoln where she taught from 1983-2020. Her many accolades\ninclude a Guggenheim Fellowship\, Fulbright Scholar Awards to Finland and\nBangladesh\, two NEA/MAAA awards\, and the 2007 Southern Graphics Council\nInternational Printmaker Emeritus Award.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Sano Gofu: 50th Anniversary of Sho-fu-an
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating Sano Gofu:\n50th Anniversary of Sho-fu-an\n(Wind in the Pines Tea Hut)\nThrough August 31\, 2025\nReception: May 11\, 2025\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm\n \nThis exhibit displays the paintings\, sketches\, and architectural plans created by Japanese artist and designer\, Sano Gofu. Gofu also designed the museum’s tea hut\, Wind in the Pines (Shofuan). \nGofu created numerous watercolors of botanicals and locations in Japan\, as well as painted fans\, scrolls\, and screens. A student of the famous nihonga painter SeihōTakeuchi\, Gofu graduated from the Kyoto Municipal Arts and Crafts College. He became a sumi-e painter: a Zen painting technique that focuses on nature using ink washes\, ink brush and watercolor paint. \nThrough the years\, many of these works were given to the Weyerhaeusers and the Art Complex Museum’s collection now contains more than 70 objects by Gofu. \nThe exhibit includes about half of the paintings by Sano Gofu in the collection\, as well as photographs and drawings of the tea hut\, which demonstrate his design process. A painted screen that Gofu created is on view in the Founders Room. \nMuseum co-founders Carl and Edith Weyerhaeuser became friends with many of the consultants who guided them in amassing over 8\,000 objects that make up the Art Complex Museum collection. Kojiro Tomita\, Curator of Asian Arts for the Museum of Fine Arts Boston\, was among the first advisors the Weyerhaeusers got to know. Tomita helped to guide their selections of Asian arts and ceramics.

SUMMARY:Duxbury Art Complex Museum - Tom Smith: Relics
DESCRIPTION:Tom Smith: RELICS\nMay 11 – August 10\, 2025\nReception: May 11\, 2025\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm\n \nRELICS showcases biomorphic\, home-grown sculptures and derivative paintings. Grapevine\, tree\, and shrub cuttings discarded for the season are used to immerse viewers in a transformational refuge of stillness designed to restore the way we perceive Nature. \nAbstract artworks suspended above\, sprouting below\, and attaching to walls evoke plant forms that coalesce to produce a serene counterbalance to the bustle of life. As a result\, the sculptures and paintings respond to one another like living things\, compelling viewers to participate. \nRepeated patterns intrinsic to each piece invoke a sense of calm and order. Strategic placement creates shadows that enfold the gallery and viewers\, spurring curiosity and contemplation. As the show title implies\, RELICS hints at the amplitude of possibilities for resurrecting overlooked remnants while offering a new aesthetic value as art.

SUMMARY:Plymouth Center for the Arts presents "A Different Vision 2.0"
DESCRIPTION:A Different Vision 2.0\nRegistration Begins\nMay 21\, 2025 \nA Different Vision returns to Plymouth Center for the Arts in a newly imagined way. Artists and audiences alike are encouraged to see\, hear\, touch\, smell\, interact with and even manipulate the art. \nWhile a Different Vision began as a show specifically for the visually impaired\, the show for 2025 endeavors to expand how all viewers experience art through exploration beyond traditional viewing. The experience will challenge the notion that sight is essential for creating and enjoying exceptional art\, while also emphasizing touch as a fundamental part of our daily lives and overall sensual experience.

SUMMARY:Laura Harvey "Heat Wave"
DESCRIPTION:The Helen Bumpus Gallery presents\nLaura Harvey’s “Heat Wave”\n\nArtist Statement\nAs a mixed media artist\, I create intricately layered collages on a variety of substrates: from canvas and traditional birch panels to hollow-core doors. To intuitively create each piece\, I draw from an ever-evolving collection of media and vintage ephemera\, building layers using paint\, papers (found\, purchased and hand painted)\, acrylic mediums\, graphite\, photo transfers and more. I derive a storyteller’s satisfaction watching each piece evolve during the creative process – from the initial blur of an idea to a completed visual.

SUMMARY:Imperfect by Christine Marohn at South Shore Conservatory
DESCRIPTION:  \nSSAC presents “imperfect”\, a solo show of Christine Marohn’s glorious work.  On view at the South Shore Conservatory\, July 1st through September 28th. \n  \nArtist Statement\nMy painting is a reflection of my efforts to make something beautiful from a chaotic\, confusing and often insecure 30 years as a military wife and stay at home mother. \nI use words layered with translucent color to symbolize the calls I have always heard to return to art; the imposed self-criticism for letting painting go for so long; the insecurity I feel returning to it.I want the viewer to see a beautiful painting but continue to look deeper – to really see how my work is composed through courses of words\, color and personal autobiography. \nMy life has had many layers – many good\, colorful layers and experiences that has made me into who I am today\, an artist returning to herself. \nAbout the artist\nChristine is an artist working in her chosen home of Duxbury\, Massachusetts. She is a life-long artist with a degree in graphic design and illustration who enjoys using her classical training to create paintings that push color and illuminate the subconscious. Christine considers herself one of the lucky ones – among her greatest joys is the love for her husband\, EJ\, her grown and accomplished daughters Meaghan and Lauren as well as her delightful Havanese\, Pippa. \nPlease find her work on Instagram @christinemarohn
