DESCRIPTION:The James Library Presents\nGirls Just Wanna Paint The James!\n  \n      The 150th Anniversary of the James Library & Center for the Arts celebrations continue with a special Exhibition and Silent Auction Fundraiser featuring the work from nine accomplished and award winning artists that make up the group “Girls Just Wanna Paint.” \n“Girls Just Want to Paint the James!”  Opening Night Reception & Party will be held on Friday\, June 21\, 2024 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The event is free and open to the public. \nIn keeping with the 150th Celebration\, each artist of “Girls Just Wanna Paint” will be creating a piece of art using their individual perspective and style to capture images from in and around the James. All pieces will be offered up for auction during a Silent Auction from June 21\, 2024 to August 9\, 2024. All of the artists will also be exhibiting work of their own which will be on view and available for purchase. \n“Girls Just Wanna Paint” was founded by Kelley Carey MacDonald in July\, 2009 to create a supportive space for artists to share information\, resources\, opportunities and support for one another. Since its inception\, the group has had a variety of artists who have been part of the group which fosters a strong sense of camaraderie\, mutual respect\, collaboration\, courtesy as well as a unique openness and an enthusiastic and vibrant sense of fun that this group has become well known for. Curated by James Burke\, this exhibition will examine how race\, gender\, and age informs an individual’s worldview and creative response. The Art Center will host an opening reception on Thursday\, May 30 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.; admission is open to the public and free of charge.\nThe work featured in Young Black Woman | Old White Man is big and bold\, but more importantly it speaks directly\, and personally\, to the ongoing racial crisis. The two featured artists – Devyn Casey and James Burke – represent the titular voices. The artists met virtually during the pandemic. Jim saw Devyn’s work posted on a friend’s Facebook page and was incredibly moved by it. He reached out and shared some of his own work. They have been friends ever since. Devyn and Jim both have a lot in common: big families\, love for the arts\, and similar senses of humor. But they are not the same color\, and they have vastly different experiences on being American. They both have been painting about those experiences and thought it would be powerful to showcase their different experiences and viewpoints around global issues.\n\nOpening Reception:\nThursday\, May 30\, 6-8 pm
