DESCRIPTION:Artist Marcia Ballou—Kaleidoscope\nOPENING RECEPTION: FRIDAY\, MAY 10\, 2024 | 6:00-8:00 PM\nON VIEW FRIDAY\, MAY 10TH THROUGH SATURDAY\, JUNE 15\, 2024\nSPONSORED BY THE MARSHFIELD CULTURAL COUNCIL\, A LOCAL AGENCY SUPPORTED BY THE MASS CULTURAL COUNCIL\, A STATE AGENCY.\nINSPIRATION\nOn a sparkling summer day\, I was sitting on a bench in my field enjoying the bright light and beautiful summer flowers when a dance of nature appeared before my eyes. A swarm of dragonflies was diving\, circling and chasing each other\, their wings sparkling in the sunlight. And then Monarch butterflies appeared\, many of them\, floating into the scene and joining the dance. It was enchanting. This scene is held in my memory as a treasure. It is a scene I paint\, always trying to portray the feeling I had: joy. \nA KALEIDOSCOPE. \nCollage is my medium. I use a palette of painted papers\, cloth\, paints\, and threads. The process is slow\, and I employ deliberate and spontaneous applications. I create colorful gestures and intuitive patterns with paint for atmosphere and then assemble papers\, cloth\, and threads with either acrylic mediums or hand stitches. They are put together like a jigsaw puzzle. The compositions are enlivened by the unexpected combinations of material and shapes. And then sometimes a realistic painting of a favorite creature appears against the abstract dance of color. The patterns always seem to create blossoms of texture on the surface of the finished piece. My goal is to evoke joy.

All painting and drawing\, media\, sculpture\, graphics\, photography\, ceramic\, textiles\, wood or metal work\, and mixed media. Works should generally not exceed 72 inches in any dimension (including diagonal) or weigh more than 150 pounds. Works must be framed or otherwise ready for hanging/installation. Any sculpture or 3D pieces that require a pedestal must be included in entry and available for use should the piece be accepted. \nAll entries for this exhibit must be submitted online through entrythingy.com. \nNo pieces may have been shown or displayed previously at The James. \nAll works must be original\, having been created within the last three years. \nArtists\, or an assigned representative\, must submit accepted works in person. No exceptions. All pieces must be labeled on the back with artist name\, title of work\, and contact information on the standard form provided on the James Library & Center for the Arts website. \nAny work accepted for the exhibition that is not deemed representative of what was presented in the submission process is subject to rejection with no reimbursement of entry fees. All painting and drawing\, media\, sculpture\, graphics\, photography\, ceramic\, textiles\, wood or metal work\, and mixed media. Works should generally not exceed 72 inches in any dimension (including diagonal) or weigh more than 150 pounds. Works must be framed or otherwise ready for hanging/installation. Any sculpture or 3D pieces that require a pedestal must be included in entry and available for use should the piece be accepted. \nAll entries for this exhibit must be submitted online through entrythingy.com. \nNo pieces may have been shown or displayed previously at The James. \nAll works must be original\, having been created within the last three years. \nArtists\, or an assigned representative\, must submit accepted works in person. No exceptions. All pieces must be labeled on the back with artist name\, title of work\, and contact information on the standard form provided on the James Library & Center for the Arts website. \nAny work accepted for the exhibition that is not deemed representative of what was presented in the submission process is subject to rejection with no reimbursement of entry fees. This includes any changes or modifications to the work. \nAll work must be available for sale. A 35% commission/donation to The James will be due within 14 days from close of the exhibit. \nAll pieces must be available for exhibit throughout the duration of the exhibition. No early pickups. No exceptions. \nLarge 2D pieces normally framed in glass that exceed 48 inches in either direction must be framed using an acrylic glazing (such as Plexiglas) only. No clamped glass\, cardboard\, paste-on or saw tooth hangers. \nDue to safety concerns\, any work found to not be suitably framed may be disqualified and rejected from the exhibit with no refund of entry fees. \nDue to space constraints\, all 2D pieces must not exceed 48 inches x 72 inches and 3D pieces must not exceed 36 inches x 60 inches. No pieces may be larger than 72 inches on the diagonal. \nNOTE: Special exceptions may be requested in advance of entry.
