DESCRIPTION:The Helen Bumpus Gallery presents\n“Shared Realities”\na collection of works by Artist Kerry W. Buckley\n  \nArtist’s Statement\nMy lifelong passion for painting and drawing became a full-time obsession when I retired from academic life in 2013.  I look upon art as more of a craft. For me\, the work itself is a form of meditation. It is a creative process that absorbs the heart and hand. My landscapes tend to reflect seasonal changes on the outer cape from the brooding tranquility of an autumn afternoon to the off-season\, when the bones of the landscape are laid bare. There is a quiet dignity to these empty places. They are unoccupied but not abandoned. They lie in wait for the next cycle to begin. I am drawn to liminal spaces\, a portal to somewhere else. I do not try to capture reality\, but a mood\, the fleeting light of a solitary moment. My still life paintings explore the rituals that give meaning to the random contingencies of life or the ambiguous innocence of childhoods past. There is a whimsical wistfulness about these mementos that evoke a lost time of wonder and delight. I seek to engage the viewer with a shared human emotion and a slice of lived experience preserved from the relentless flow of time. \nAbout the Artist\n \nAs a student\, Kerry W. Buckley won several statewide art competitions and initially considered a degree in fine art. He was offered\, but declined\, an art scholarship choosing to become an historian specializing in American History. Throughout his academic career he continued to draw and paint. While living in western Massachusetts he developed friendships with regional neorealist artists Scott Prior\, Randal Deihl and Jane Lund whose vision and techniques inspired his work. Since his retirement from academic life\, he has studied portraiture and painting at the Guild Art Center in Northampton\, MA\, classical painting technique with Barbara Johnson\, and indirect painting techniques with Julie Beck at the Academy for Realist Art. He is a Professional Artist member of the Copley Society of Art in Boston and is a Master Artist member of the Cape Cod Art Center. To intuitively create each piece\, I draw from an ever-evolving collection of media and vintage ephemera\, building layers using paint\, papers (found\, purchased and hand painted)\, acrylic mediums\, graphite\, photo transfers and more. Robert also hosts many live painting demonstrations of his workthrough out the South Shore\, as well has judges a number of art shows. \nWorking preliminarily on the South Shore\, Robert focuses on many of the marshes and harbor scenes local of the area as well as one of his favorite spots\, Wompatuck State Park. Don’t be surprised to see him painting either with his class or on his own in your neighborhood. Cityscapes are also a forte with many urban landscapes and “storefront” oil paintings filling out his portfolio.

Fiery sunsets\, the calm of an overcast day\, gorgeous clouds…  it brings me joy to witness such splendor. \nThe beauty of the natural world is my inspiration to paint. I find the changing seasons of New England magical with their beautiful light\, color and texture. The fields\, woods\, rivers and coastline are sacred places to wonder and paint. \nMy work is varied in approach and process. I paint in different mediums: pastel\, oil\, and acrylic. When painting abstractly\, my approach is more intuitive and loose and I use acrylic or oil. With pastels\, my paintings are representational and detailed. It grew into a small firm of his own doing projects in the health-care field to publication design for national publications for clients such as the U.S. Olympic Committee\, U.S. Open Tennis and their affiliated publications. \nTony stopped working full-time approximately 10 years ago and has been concentrating on painting and photography since. It grew into a small firm of his own doing projects in the health-care field to publication design for national publications for clients such as the U.S. Olympic Committee\, U.S. Open Tennis and their affiliated publications. \nTony stopped working full-time approximately 10 years ago and has been concentrating on painting and photography since. DESCRIPTION:Duxbury Camera Club\nMinimalist Focus Group\nSimplicity\n\nArtists’ Statement\nMinimalism in photography is all about “less is more.” It is about stripping a subject down to its bare essentials and creating photos that are a celebration of austere simplicity. \nAs minimalist photographers\, we not only strive to keep our compositions clean and simple but we also honor the boundaries and rules that are common to the minimalist genre. For example\, motifs that you will often see displayed in our works include: geometric shapes\, repeating patterns\, bold lines and textures. We also apply techniques such as: intentional blurring and the use of B&W\, or Monotones\, to help with eliminating the details. \nWhen we started our Minimalist Focus Group a few years ago\, many of us were new to the genre. We initially found it to be daunting to try and maintain the right balance of drama and interest in a simple “bare-bones” photograph. If we removed too little…our image would not be considered  minimalist. However\, if we removed too much…the intent and drama of the photo would ultimately be lost. \nOver time\, we studied various minimalist artists and increased our knowledge on the subject. This helped our work to evolve. Now\, our minimalist photographs are not only simple compositions but they are well thought out photographs that convey our own personal story\, point of view\, and unique style. \nOur exhibition\, Simplicity\, is the culmination of all that we have learned over the past several years about Minimalist Photography. I love the vistas and tucked away places I discover along roads less traveled. I am especially moved by those places where air\, water and earth meet and those moments when nature blesses us with visual and spiritual images that take our breath away…the rising of the sun\, snow flakes falling from the heavens\, the crashing of waves during a storm or their soft lapping of the shoreline on a calm summer morning. DESCRIPTION:Artist’s Statement – STILL LIFE\nIn my studio are southwest facing windows. The light streams in at varying angles during the course of the year and I am mesmerized by the way it transforms whatever it hits to make it exceptional. The objects and space change each minute the level of light moves across the plane. I find myself intensely observing and absorbing the changes as if I were watching a movie. At times\, all I can do is stand in intense study and watch the light work its magic—all of the sudden hours have passed. \nIn my process\, I am struck by a particular subject—Light and the way it affects objects\, Light as it hits a sur- face and moves across it\, the color of Light. I study the motif through drawings and paintings to see where it leads. Working in series helps me explore subtle elements in the composition. I am constantly questioning what I am seeing and doing. The work develops through reworking\, redrawing\, turning the substrate I am working on and imposing images on top\, scraping\, sanding\, adding and subtracting media. Through this process\, they reveal a history of the workings\, as in a palimpsest. I try not to hold anything precious. \n\nArtist Bio\nKim Alemian was born in Spokane\, WA. Her formative years were spent in Hong Kong\, Thailand\, West Germany and Scituate\, MA. She currently lives with her husband in Cohasset\, MA. \nAlemian’s oil paintings are represented by The Cove Gallery—Wellfleet\, MA\, Edgewater Gallery—MIiddlebury\, VT and Boston\, MA and Gardner Colby Gallery—Naples\, FL. Her work has been shown both nationally and in- ternationally including the Netherlands and Israel and is collected both privately and in corporate settings. She was featured in the publication “100 Boston Painters” by Chawky Frenn\, Schiffer Publishing. Her work has been reviewed in printed publications and online. \nShe has a BFA in Painting from Massachusetts College of Art and an MFA from the College of Fine Arts\, School of Visual Arts at Boston University with Post Graduate studies at New York Studio School of Drawing\, Painting and Sculpture. \nAlemian works as an artist and also at South Shore Art Center as Graphic Designer/Webmaster/ Artistic Curator.
